Richard Freng was born on June 17, 1936 to parents Clifford and Ruth (Sathe) Freng in Yankton. They later divorced and Dick lived with his mom until he joined the Army in November of 1954. He spent most of his service time in Germany. Once in awhile he would tell some of the stories of events while there. He especially enjoyed their German Fest time.
When Dick returned to Yankton, he started to work with Northwest Public Service. He generated electricity for 45 years with NWPS, retiring in 2004. It was in June of 1968 that the family transferred from Yankton to Huron.
He married Beverly Meyer from Hartington, NE in Vermillion on May 28, 1960. They celebrated their 60 th anniversary this year. With COVID running rampid, the family had to cancel the anniversary celebration.
Dick enjoyed bowling with his buddies; and as each one passed away a little bit of him went too, in fact he wore a hip out! He made sure that the kids all knew how to bowl and how to be a sport at the game. When they started out bowling with him, he just sat and enjoyed watching them throw the ball. You could tell if you were doing good just by the look that you got if you threw it wrong. Bowling state tournament time was family vacation time. But come Springtime, it was time to put the bowling balls away and head for the river. Many memories flow from the West Bend area and from the Nystrom Bay above Pierre. The fishing schedule was always worked around the little league games. He and Kyle spent many hours out at the little league diamond. Dick knew the rules and made sure everyone followed them; not always a pretty site!
He was very proud of his "Harem of 5 girls." He was proud they all graduated, with some going to college and others ending with jobs he was proud of. Kyle went on to start his own business doing cement work.
With Dick's service record he became eligible to be a life member of the VFW. He earned many honors for his many hours dedicated to the organization. Most will remember him from BINGO night. He was also an American Legion member. He was the mastermind on promoting the Veteran's Day during the South Dakota State Fair. Dick was most proud of the VFW golf cart program at the South Dakota State Fair that he and members of the VFW and Bev and the Ladies' Aux. got rolling. He had not missed a year of driving a golf cart.
The last four years were tough for Dick; he was three days away from getting a new hip when he ended up with sepsis. He spent 90 days in the VA hospital recovering. Dick then had more health issues and his body was wearing out. On July 31 st , he checked out of this world into eternal life, all of his family was with him at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles.
Dick is survived by his wife Beverly of Huron; six children; Karen (Greg) Olson of Rapid City and their children, Amanda (Jason) Daniels (Eliza and Owen), Justin (fiancé Britta Barta) Olson all of Sioux Falls, Carmen (Brent) Mason and their children, Tyler, Tory and Teagan, all of Frankfort, Kyle Freng of Huron, Cristen (Pat Ellwein) Kuno of Rapid City and her children, Nicholas and Nicole Kuno of Madison, WI, Karla (Corey) Wiegel of Huron and their children Morgan of Sioux Falls and Nolan of Huron, and Courtney (Nate Olson) Freng and their children, Anetta and Graham, all of Minneapolis.
