Richard "Dick" Flanery, age 78, of Cave Creek, AZ, formerly of Huron, SD, died Monday, July 14, 2014, surrounded by his family at Hospice of the Valley Sherman House on the Mayo Hospital Campus in Phoenix, AZ. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday, July 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Dick was born May 30, 1936 in Sioux Falls, SD, to George and Mildred (Dietle) Flanery. He was the 8th child of 11 brothers and sisters. As a young child his family moved to Milbank, SD. At age 9 he was stricken with polio and spent next two years recovering in a hospital and his home. He graduated from Milbank High School then attended the University of South Dakota where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was student body president in the 1957-1958 school year and graduated with a degree in business. It was also while attending the University that he met his wife, Marcia Herried. They were married August 5th, 1961. His business career started soon after college by becoming the office manager for his father's company, Flanery Foods. In 1964 he moved to Huron, SD, to expand the business by purchasing a local meat packing plant. He moved into the role of company president in 1968 and grew the business with plants in Huron, Milbank, Rapid City for a short time, and Scottsbluff, NE. During this time he was recognized as a distinguished alumni for the University of South Dakota Business School. He was a member of the Huron College Board of Trustees; chairman of the Beadle County Republican Party; involved with the Huron Chamber of Commerce; and member of The Greater Huron Development Corporation. He also supported numerous community organizations on a local and state level. In 1988 he moved to Scottsdale, AZ, where he was president of an international company until starting his own mortgage company and continued in lending until his retirement in 2006. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marcia, of Cave Creek, AZ; 3 sons, Tim (Adele) Flanery of Huron, SD, Scott (Diana) Flanery of Cave Creek, AZ, and Rich (Sherry) Flanery of Estes Park, CO; and 9 grandchildren Krystal, Taylor, Sean, Carter, Kalia, Josie, Kasey, Connor and Kaelin. Preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers, Jim, Tom, Jack, Dave, Ed, and Dennis; 4 sisters, Eileen, Bonnie, Donna, and Kathy.
