Richard H. Dick Carlson, age 71, of Hitchcock, SD, died Monday, January 29, 2007, at his home. His memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 3, at the United Methodist Church at Hitchcock with Rev. Mark Britton and Rev. Tom Pickles officiating. Military Rites will be by the Raymond-Hart American Legion Post #84 of Hitchcock. There will be no visitation. Richard Henry Carlson was born on June 17, 1935, to Roy and Lavone (Mayborne) Carlson at Billings, MT. He attended school at Laurel, MT, and Billings, MT. He moved with his family to Bakersfield, CA, in April of 1953 where he graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1953. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Navy with the Construction Battalion Seabees during the Korean Conflict, being stationed in California, Alaska, and Okinawa. After his honorable discharge he returned to Bakersfield. On October 3, 1970, Dick married Carol Gilbert. He was employed with Pacific Bell Telephone Company for 35 years, first as a lineman then retiring as construction foreman. They resided at Shell Beach, CA, for 20 years moving to Hitchcock, SD, in 1998. He was a member of the Elks Club, VFW, Eagles Lodge, and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, carpentry, and was a great cook. He is survived by his wife, Carol of Hitchcock; 1 son, Brian Carlson of Santa Maria, CA; 1 step-daughter, Teresa Carr of Hitchcock; 1 brother, Alan (Nina) Carlson of Sagle, ID; 2 step-granddaughters, Cindel Carr of Atoka, OK, and Tabatha Carr of Hitchcock; 6 brothers-in-law, Richard (Mary) Gilbert of Carpenter, Kenny (Shirley) Gilbert of Hitchcock, Charles (Bernice) Gilbert of Hitchcock, Jerry (Kathy) Gilbert of Hitchcock, Ron (Mary) Gilbert of Hitchcock, and Tom (Sharlene) Gilbert of Hitchcock; 8 sisters-in-law, Delores Gilbert of Hitchcock, JoAnn (Jimmy) Schley of Hitchcock, Evelyn (Beryl) Schley of Paxico, KS, Helen (Tom) Pickles of Hitchcock, Ellen Kay (Ed) Haigh of Hitchcock, Connie (Al) McNeely of Ft. Pierre, Susan (Chad) Martin of Moorhead, MN, and Beth (Scott) Moore of Lakewood, CA; and many niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 1 daughter, Julie in 1989.
