Richard "Dick" Boomsma, age 81, of rural Huron, died Thursday, October 27, 2011, in Huron. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 31, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey with burial at Broadland Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home, continuing 6-8 p.m. with family present at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Richard Boomsma, son of Steve and Elizabeth (Miedema) Boomsma, was born on July 31, 1930, in Huron, SD. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1948. He continued to live and farm on the family homestead. On July 2, 1950, Dick married Bonnie Brush. Dick farmed and raised cattle all of his adult life. In 1978, they moved to an acreage near Broadland. On December 31, 1994, Dick married Sally Pfliger in Wolsey. They continued to live on the acreage. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey. His interests included farming and raising cattle, playing cards, traveling, driving around the area looking at the crops and farms. On his property Dick planted and tended more than 50 pine trees. He is survived by his wife, Sally of Huron; 6 children, Rick (Kandice) Boomsma of Hitchcock, Dave (Judy) Boomsma of Wolsey, Doug (Peggy) Boomsma of Frankfort, Debra Boomsma of Midvale, UT, Lisa Boomsma of Huron, and Koran (Stephanie) Peterson of Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Boomsma, Jeff (Tracy) Boomsma, Tim Boomsma, Derrik Boomsma, Jay (Heidi) Boomsma, Kim (Ryan) Bergh, Ryan (Barb) Boomsma, Brad (Amanda) Boomsma, Kayla (Jason) Jung, Kale Peterson, Konnor Peterson, and Kathryn Peterson; 18 great grandchildren, Alex, Ashley, Taylor, Boston, Jack, Jalen, Marley, Tyla, Blair, Brylie, Tate, Trevor, Ty, Cassie, Alexi, Brodie, Peyton, and Jaycee; 4 sisters, Agnes Teveldal of Huron, Reva Stengle of Austin, TX, Elizabeth Hiles of Huron, and Carol Brenner of Huron; 1 brother, Jacob (Kay) Boomsma of Huron; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers-in-law.
