There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Rena M. Jurgens was born Rena M. Brass on November 3, 1918, to Reiner and Dena (Bloem) Brass in rural Turner County near Chancellor, SD. She grew up in Turner County and attended school at the Chancellor Public School and District #90 School located nearby. On March 8, 1939, Rena married Harold Jurgens at the Chancellor Germantown Church. They were married 59 years until Harrys death on November 16, 1998. They lived at Parker, SD, from the time of their marriage until 1946 when they joined other family members in the Alpena area. Harold and Rena were partners in farming for 31 years, first on a farm northeast of Alpena and then from 1950 to 1977 in the Wessington Springs area. They retired to Alpena where they spent 21 wonderful years together. Rena will be remembered for her generosity. She enjoyed sharing her homemade jelly and baked goods along with her garden products. Each grandchild received an afghan that she had crocheted. Making Bed Dolls was another favorite pastime. Rena was a lifelong baseball fan. She played kitten ball as a young girl and attended games when Harry played in the mid 1930s. They followed the Wessington Springs and Alpena independent teams for many years. A special thrill for them was to watch Richard and their grandsons play. In Renas later years one could find her watching her favorite teams on television. While farming near Wessington Springs, Rena was a member of the Cherry Country Club and Long Lake Farmers Union. She enjoyed reading, traveling and reminiscing with her family. She is survived by her 4 children, Shirley (Ron) Schroeder of Alpena, Ina Mae (Paul) Kopfmann of Alpena, Richard (Kathleen) Jurgens of Alpena, and Linda Jurgens of Alpena; 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Harry in 1998; and 3 brothers, Fred, Elmer, and Clarence Brass.
