Obituary

Raymond E. Ike Polfus, age 86, of 854 Idaho Ave. SE, Huron, died Monday, October 16, 2006, at his home. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 19th, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday afternoon. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Raymond Edward Polfus was born on August 21, 1920, to Paul and Clara (Miottel) Polfus at rural Revillo, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church at Revillo. He attended grade school at Revillo and graduated from Revillo High School in 1939. After his graduation Ike worked on a farm near Milbank, SD. In 1943, the family moved to Pierre where he drove a cab and worked at a service station where the local bus station was located. In 1949, Ike was servicing busses in Pierre when a Jack Rabbit driver asked him to go to Sioux Falls because the company was planning to hire new drivers. He made the trip and got the job, beginning with the Yankton to Sioux Falls run. He remained at this location until February, 1950 when he moved to Huron to begin the run to Mitchell and back. He has lived in Huron since that time. On February 20, 1978, Ike married Lois Ruth Herberg at the First United Methodist Church Chapel in Sioux Falls. While living in Huron, he drove the bus for the Huron College choir for about 22 years, the Augustana College choir in Sioux Falls for about 18 years, the Sioux Falls College choir for several years and the Huron College football and basketball teams for about 18 years. After a 36 year career as a bus driver for Jack Rabbit Bus Lines and driving over 3.5 million miles traveling to all the continental states except Florida, he retired on March 31, 1985. He was a 50 year member of the United Commercial Travelers. He was an outdoorsman and his hobbies were bowling, hunting, fishing and camping. He loved sports and while in Revillo he managed a baseball team. He is survived by his wife Lois of Huron; 1 daughter, Rachel (Michael) Marshall of Huron; 1 son, Raymond A. Polfus and his fianc Gina Small of Huron; 2 grandchildren, Jordan and Lexi Miller of Huron; 3 sisters, Geraldine (Curtis) Anderson of Madison, MN, Norma (Dick) Petersen of Livingston, MT, and Darlene (Myron) Reinartz of Huron; 7 nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; 1 great-great niece and 1 great-great nephew; and 2 grand puppies Buster and Susie. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother-in-law, Cecil Kirsch. Casket bearers will be Ed Cup Durst, Dennis Reinartz, Don Miller, John Wollman, Frank Amundson, and Bill Carlson. Memorials may be given to the Huron Regional Medical Center Home Health & Hospice.
