Obituary

Dr. Raymond Linder, age 87, of 420 21st St. SW, Huron, SD, and formerly of Brookings, died Sunday, September 27, 2009, at StoneyBrook Suites in Huron.

His funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, at Welter Funeral Home with burial at St. Thomas More Cemetery in Brookings.

Visitation will be Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Raymond Lewis Linder, son of Josef and Catherine (Heins) Linder, was born on September 9, 1922, in Grand Island, NE. He received his education in Grand Island and graduated from high school there in 1939.

On May 13, 1943, Ray entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a SSgt on December 27, 1945.

On October 2, 1948, Ray married Elizabeth Betty Slattery in Grand Island. In 1950, he attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and received his Bachelors Degree. He continued his education at Iowa State University at Ames and received his Masters Degree. In 1964, he received his PhD Degree from the University of Nebraska in Wildlife Management. Ray then moved to Brookings, SD, where he was head of the United States Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit and taught at SDSU in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries until his retirement in 1985. Ray was also active in many conservation organizations.

On May 5, 2007, he moved to Huron and lived at the Huron Towers. Two weeks prior to his death he became a resident at StoneyBrook Suites in Huron.

While living in Brookings Ray was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church; Golden K Kiwanis Club; NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees); American Legion Post #74; George Dokken VFW Post #2118; United Ostomy Association; and attended American Lutheran Church in Huron.

He especially enjoyed hunting; fishing; wood carving; painting; and working on his computer.

He is survived by 4 children, Catherine Christensen of Thief River Falls, MN, Barbara (Ken) Solomon of Huron, Sharon (Russ) Koopman of Bird Island, MN, and Michael (Denise) Linder of Lincoln, NE; 8 grandchildren, Jeffery Charles Christensen, James Ray (Sara) Christensen, Joseph Roy (Wendie) Solomon, Jeremy Ryan Solomon, Kara Lena Linder, Luke Raymond Linder, Joshua Linder Koopman, and Elizabeth Rae Koopman; 4 great grandchildren, Adam Christensen, Bailey Solomon, Dawson Solomon, and Mykaila Solomon; and 1 brother, Allan (Mary) Linder of Pueblo, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty on January 1, 2007; 2 brothers, William Linder, and Edward Linder.
