Raymond Walter Jager, son of Fred Claus and Edna (Garbe) Jager was born on February 23, 1934, in Huron, South Dakota. Ray attended school in Alpena and graduated from Alpena High School on May 16, 1952. Ray joined the United States Army and served honorably from 1954-1956.
On June 5, 1964, Ray married Jacqueline McGillvrey at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. Ray and Jackie made their home in Huron where he worked construction, drove truck, and worked for Asphalt Paving. In May of 1965, Ray started working for the street department for the city of Huron as a maintenance man. He was later promoted to city street superintendent. In November of 1995 he retired from the city of Huron after 30 years, 8 of which he was superintendent. After retirement, he worked part-time for Asphalt Paving for a couple of years.
Ray was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion. Ray's grandkids were his pride and joy. They each had special memories, including playing dominoes, walking to Rocket Slide Park, going fishing, ordering just a plain hamburger, cups of regular black coffee, and taking trips to the colony to get cucumbers to make Grandma Garbe's pickles. He was also known for his ability to drive across town with his coffee cup and keys on his back bumper, without losing them!
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jackie on January 30, 2023; his grandparents; his brother Arthur Jager and sister Delores Weeldreyer.
Ray is survived by his children, son Timothy (Tammy) Jager of Red Lodge, Montana and daughter Tracy (Steven) Meikle of Watertown, SD; five grandchildren, Jeremy Jager of Billings, Jessica Jager of Red Lodge, Andrew Jager of Denver, Lauren (fiancé Brad Bunde) Meikle of Florence, and Lindsey Meikle of Sioux Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
