IN LOVING MEMORY OF
R. Kent
Osborn, Jr.
January 21, 1949 – November 7, 2024
With fond memories, profound sadness, and reflection on our own mortality, Robert Kent Osborn, Jr. 's brothers and sisters announce his death at the age of 75, November 7, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Hospice in Canton, South Dakota from the complications of a long illness. Kent, as he came to be called, was born January 21, 1949, the second of nine children of Robert Kent Sr. and Elizabeth York (Vosler) Osborn of Huron, SD. The recorded low temperature that day was -31 below zero and Kent's mother liked to say the day of his birth "... was a cold day in Huron." Kent attended Saint Theresa Catholic Elementary School and Huron High School living with his siblings. He was charming and fun-loving, acquiring many friends throughout his life. After high school, Kent attended Nichols College in Dudley, MA, and the University of Denver, graduating in 1973 with a BS in Business. During the summers he worked as a Ranger in Yellowstone Park.
After college, Kent joined his father's retail clothing business, managing stores in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1975 he married Ann Montgomery of Huron. He had a passion for automobiles and in 1978 he started Classic Motor Cars in Sioux Falls. He operated this dealership until 1989 when he contracted spinal meningitis which left him disabled. He sold the dealership to an employee and traveled, settling first in Anchorage, Alaska and then in Phumrump, NV, all the while working in the car industry. He eventually returned to Sioux Falls and lived with his longtime companion, Cynthia (Bradfield) Jacobs, originally of Huron. They married in 2021.
Kent enjoyed the outdoors and visiting friends and family around the county. After his illness he was particularly sympathetic and helpful to those suffering from disabilities. But, most of all he enjoyed buying and selling cars. If he was selling a vehicle, it was all but perfect, and, if he was purchasing one, its flaws depreciated its value beyond embarrassment.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Sheldon Andrew "Andy" Osborn of Aliso Viejo, CA. He is survived by his wife Cindy, his siblings, Sheldon of Sioux Falls, Janet of Palm Desert, CA, Mary (Wayne Wetherell) of San Diego, CA, John (Susan) of Huron, Carol Ann of Salt Lake City, UT, Victoria (Erik Kingman) of Boise, ID, Patricia (Mark Reilly) of San Diego, CA, Thomas of Edgartown, MA and 14 nieces and nephews.
A Remembrance for Kent will be held by the family and announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Kent by contributing to the South Dakota Parent Connection, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that connects families caring for disabled individuals to available information, training, and resources.
