Obituary

Pietje Anderson, age 99, of De Smet and formerly of 375 Dakota Ave South, Huron, died Monday, May 7, 2007 at the De Smet Good Samaritan Center. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Friday, May 11th at the First United Methodist Church in Huron with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Altoona Cemetery, rural Hitchcock. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday morning. The family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. Pietje Anderson was born Pietje DeVries on August 27, 1907, to Albert and Egbertje (Scheenstra) DeVries in Holland. In 1910, she came to the United States with her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Pietje lived around the Springfield area and then moved to Broadland in 1919. She attended school in the Broadland area. On February 23, 1927, Pietje married Roy Anderson at Huron. In 1939, they moved to Willow Lake and in 1964 they moved back to Huron. She was employed at Huron Cleaners for many years and the Huron Nursing Home for 19 years in the kitchen. She moved to the De Smet Good Samaritan Center in February of 2007. Pietje was a life-time member of the Huron Area Senior Center and RSVP. She volunteered for many years serving ice cream and was in charge of crafts. She also belonged to the Ladies Aid of Fairfield Township. She enjoyed traveling, including trips to Florida and Holland. Her other hobbies included crafts, crocheting and Bingo. In 1995, she was named KOKK Mother of the Year. She is survived by 2 daughters, Delores (Roger) Denman of Madison and Darlene (Harold) Meester of Watertown; 5 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; 1 sister, Susie Graham of Mitchell, 1 sister-in-law, Rozella DeVries of Huron; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Anderson on June 16, 1973, her parents, two brothers, Henry and Arthur DeVries, three sisters, Bertha Miedema, Anna Wieting and Laura Lau, one sister-in-law Grace DeVries, and four brothers-in-law, Harry Lau, Steve Miedema, George Wieting and Walter Graham.
