Obituary

A talented quilter and afghan maker, it's a rare night when all of Phyllis Worrall's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren aren't wrapped in one of her creations. Now she's wrapped in the Lord's embrace.

Phyllis, 95, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at her daughter's home in Huron. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron. Burial will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Her visitation, with her family present, will be from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. A Scripture Service will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Phyllis Marie Schmitz was born on May 30, 1927, in Lemmon, South Dakota to parents Ralph and Mary (Fritschen) Schmitz. Phyllis grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, graduating from high school at age 16. She attended secretarial school and started working for Standard Oil Company in Fargo, where she met the boss' son, Robert B. Worrall. Phyllis and Robert were married on May 17, 1947, in Fargo. They welcomed their son, Bruce in 1948, shortly thereafter, the new family moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota and then Duluth, Minnesota, where daughter Jeanne was born. Robert was transferred to Huron, South Dakota in 1957. Standard Oil told the family not to buy a house as they would be transferred soon to either Chicago or Australia. With this, Robert retired from Standard Oil and bought the Traveler Motel in Huron, which he and Phyllis owned and operated together for many years. Roger, Brian, and Susan completed their family. While raising her family, Phyllis also enjoyed working outside of the home for Luddy's Flower Shop and Rainbow Flower Shop. She was the executive secretary for The Daily Plainsman for 16 years. After retirement, Phyllis kept busy as a Pink Lady and hospice volunteer at Huron Regional Medical Center.

Spending time with her family was of utmost importance to Phyllis. Whether it be family dinners, camping, or attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities, Phyllis loved being with family.  She was an active member of St. Martin Catholic Church and Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children and grandchildren; son Bruce and Glenda Worrall of Prescott, Ariz., and their children, Jana and Jeb Worrall, Scott and Lori Worrall, and Heather and Dainer Lores; daughter Jeanne and Dana Hess of Brookings, and their children Alan and Ann Hess, and Paul Hess; son Brian and Melanie Worrall and their children Jamie Worrall, Kelsey and Mike Schmidt, and Jackson Worrall and Mazzie Murphy; daughter Susan and Jim Searing of Huron, and their children Ty Searing and Danyelle Larson and Cole and Ashley Searing; granddaughter Jennifer and Joe Mees; and 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way; daughter-in-law, Barb Worrall; nieces and nephews; and her flower shop girls and her boys at the Plainsman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 1989; her son, Roger Worrall in 2010; and her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Elaine Schmitz.
