Phyllis Jean Friese was born on October 31, 1931 to parents, Frederick and Perdita (Baker) Friese on a farm five miles South East of Huron, she joined two brothers, Ronald and Kenneth, and one sister, Corinne. With her siblings, she attended country school from grades 1 to 8. It was a one-mile walk to school, in all kinds of weather. She then attended Huron High School and graduated in 1950.

At a church gathering in the fall of 1951, Phyllis and Marcus Kohlmeyer started dating. They were married in Huron on June 1, 1952. The young couple farmed north of Wolsey for five years and then moved to Huron in 1958. Phyllis worked as an operator and repair clerk for Northwestern Bell Telephone for 25 years.

The couple loved to go camping with their children, Nancy, Mark and Marilyn. After retiring, they became members of the Huron Rovers Camping Club that would travel and camp together around the state. Phyllis and Marcus stayed busy as active members of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where they were lifelong members. She was also involved with the Telephone Pioneers, Telco Credit Union, and the Red Cross. Phyllis loved to crochet and embroider and do word search puzzles and play card games. Spending time with her family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was important to her. She enjoyed having coffee with friends and helping people in need.

She is survived by her children, Nancy (Michael) Leyba of Sioux Falls, Mark (special friend Violet Kjellstom) Kohlmeyer of Huron, and Marilyn (Terry) McHenry of Huron; 3 grandchildren, Chad Kohlmeyer, Becky (Ben) Dragt, and Christopher (Rebecca) McHenry; 6 great-grandchildren, Kierra, Conner, Courtney & Kayden Dragt, Ian & Alexis McHenry; sister Corinne Kohlmeyer of Huron; sister-in-law Beverly Kohlmeyer of Huron; brother-in-law Max Kohlmeyer of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marcus in 2011; her parents; two brothers, Ronald and Kenneth Friese; sisters-in-law, Amanda (Arnold) Noack, Phyllis Kohlmeyer and Doris Kohlmeyer; brothers-in-law Nathaniel Kohlmeyer, Leonard Kohlmeyer, and Marcel Kohlmeyer (in infancy).
