Pearl Emma Metter was born in Beadle County to Herman and Emma (Kapitzky) Metter on December 4, 1923. Pearl was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Iroquois. She attended rural school, before graduating from Cavour High School, working for her room and board, to stay in town and attend high school.
On October 27, 1943, Pearl married Albert Zell. Pearl and Albert were married in a double wedding ceremony at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Iroquois, with Albert's oldest sister and her husband Herman Johannsen. Pearl was a definite farmer's wife, she worked side by side with her husband, hauling bales and doing field work.
Pearl was a self-taught organist and pianist; she played for two churches every Sunday for many years. Pearl and Albert also sang duets and quartets for funerals and weddings. Pearl's home was full of baked cookies, breads and homemade donuts, with the coffee pot always on! Friends and neighbors knew this and were always welcome and often came for coffee as early as 7 am, sharing good stories. Pearl's biggest hobby was gardening and flowers. At one time, she had as many as 75 African Violets. She canned hundreds and hundreds of jars of garden produce. She definitely had a "green thumb." Anytime you stopped at Pearl's house or at SunQuest, you knew that the deck of cards would come out and you better be on your toes as she was a sharp card player.
Pearl is survived by two children, Bob (Jackie) Zell, Keizer, Or, and Donna LeGrand, Huron; four grandchildren, Rhonda (Scott) Klinkel, Troy (Meagan) Zell, Tamara Zell, and Tricia (Jason) Allen; eight great-grandchildren, Zachary Cranston, Chad Klinkel, Jennifer Letvin, McKenzie Allen, Cadin Allen, Madelyn Scherling, Mason Zell, and Charlotte Lee Zell; and one great-great grandchild, Elaina Klinkel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert; granddaughter, Brenda Cranston; son-in-law, John LeGrand; six brothers, Herman Metter, Albert Metter, Bill Metter, Frank Metter, Donald Metter, and Richard Metter; three sisters, Clara Metter, Eva Costello and Elizabeth Hammond.
