Pauline L. Hobbie, age 91, of Zion, IL and formerly of Huron, died Monday, August 24th at her son's and daughter's-in-law residence in Zion, IL. Her funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday at the Welter Funeral Home with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Pauline Lois Hobbie was born on a farm near Midland, SD on December 5, 1923 to William O. and Della E. (Lunbeck) Howard. She was the youngest of seven children of which only six survived into adulthood. Her siblings were named Doris, Lillian, Ralph, Ned, Leonard, and Genevieve. Her father was a farmer and also a pastor in the Wesleyan Methodist denomination. In Pauline's early childhood, the Howard family lived in a log cabin on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and later moved into Wanblee, SD. After Pauline finished elementary school, the family moved to Mt. Vernon, SD, and later to Flandreau, SD. Pauline attended teacher's college at Wessington Springs, SD and taught elementary school after her college graduation. She also went back and taught for a few years in the early 1960's. She was united in marriage to Ernest Hobbie on July 16, 1953, in a double wedding along with her sister Genevieve. Ernest was a pastor in the Wesleyan Methodist denomination. Pauline transitioned into the role of wife, mother, and homemaker for the majority of her married life. Ernest and Pauline had two sons; Douglas who was born in 1955 and Stanley in 1957. Pauline was very involved in the activities of the churches Ernest pastored in North and South Dakota until he and Pauline retired in 1976, and moved to Huron, SD. Pauline enjoyed playing the piano and organ, gardening and flowers, bird watching and butterflies, and sewing and altering bridal gowns. Pauline is survived by her son Douglas (Barbara) Hobbie of Zion, IL; two grandchildren, Wesley (Catherine) Hobbie of Niles, IL, and Rolland Hobbie of Chicago, IL; and 1 sister Genevieve (Don) Reeves of rural White Lake, SD. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son Stanley in 1957, husband Ernest in 2008, 2 sisters, and 3 brothers.
