Obituary

Paul J. Tebay, age 88, of Alpena, died Friday, October 21, 2005 at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 25th at the United Parish of Alpena with Rev. Sarah Herman officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery at Alpena. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Tuesday morning. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the Welter Funeral Home. Paul J. Tebay was born on December 30, 1916, to John L. and Mildred (Knieriem) Tebay on the family farm in rural Alpena. He began grade school in one-room country school, and graduated from Alpena High School in 1934. After graduating, he was employed by Farmers Union Station in Alpena. On February 15, 1940, Paul married Golda Peterson of Alpena. In 1942, he helped start the Alpena Co-op Creamery. In 1945, Paul established the Alpena Farm Service Store, which he operated for 25 years before selling it in 1970. Paul then became affiliated with American State Bank of Alpena, Wessington Springs and Wolsey. In 1955, he became a Pioneer Hi-Bred Seed dealer and served the area for 36 years before retiring. Through the years, Paul was a member of the Alpena Fire Department, served on the town board, which he was mayor for part of the time, was the church treasurer for 13 years, and most of his lifetime, served as the unofficial town historian. As an influential town resident, Paul was awarded the Outstanding Alpena Alumni award in 1997. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, playing cards, traveling, genealogy and spending time with his large family. Paul is survived by his wife Golda of Alpena; 6 children, Darrell (Linda), Delayne (WyAnn), Doreen (Darwin) Ochsner, Diana (Lynn) Presuhn and Dallas (Susan), all of Alpena, and Debra (Scott) Manning of Miller; 14 grandchildren, Pam (Stacey) Kopfmann, Candi (Chad) Olson, Rick (Tiffany) Tebay, Brent (Kris) Tebay, DeVonne (Scott) Losing, Dean (Shawn) Ochsner, Sherri (Jason) Miller, Stacie (Troy) Dowling, Michelle Presuhn, Casey Tebay, Jackie (Rocky) Miller, Julie Tebay, Christi Tracy and Tim (Nichole) Wenz; 24 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law; 3 sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong family friend Madonna Gamble. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Duane; a daughter, Donna, at age 3; a great-granddaughter; a sister; 2 sisters-in-law and 4 brothers-in-law. Casket bearers will be Rick Tebay, Brent Tebay, Dean Ochsner, Casey Tebay, Tim Wenz and Scott Losing.
