Paul Madison, age 80, of Carthage, SD, died Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at his home under hospice care. His memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, August 28, at the United Church of Christ in Carthage with Rev. Richard Poppen officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be at Pleasant View Cemetery at Carthage with Military Rites by the Carthage American Legion Post. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Miner County Relay for Life or the Huron Regional Medical Center Hospice. Paul Luverne Madison was born on June 22, 1926, at the family farm northeast of Carthage to John and Mary (Cramton) Madison. He attended country school and graduated from Carthage High School in 1944. After graduation he earned his private pilots license so he could enjoy his life-long love of flying. On April 2, 1953, Paul married Sally Lou Johnson at Esmond. He began his military service on April 21, 1953, where he worked as a helicopter mechanic in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged on April 20, 1955. He returned to the Carthage area and worked on the family farm his entire life. Beginning in 1978, in addition to farming, he also was a rural mail carrier for the Carthage Post Office. He served on the Carthage School Board for 27 years and was a member of the Masons and the Carthage American Legion. Paul was a man with great values and work ethic which he instilled in his children from an early age. He set goals and always met or exceeded them with integrity and a sense of pride and accomplishment. Paul loved his farm and livestock and took great care of both. He is survived by his wife, Sally of Carthage; son Norman (Stacie Rowell) Madison of Carthage; daughter, Pam (Randy) Lager of Carthage; daughter, Paula (Corky) Stevens of Howard and their children Grant (Amy) Stevens, and Gavin Stevens and special friend Stephanie; and son Jeff (Barb) Madison and their children Sara, John and Jason, all of Iroquois. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 5 older half-brothers.
