Paul Konst, age 80, of 1908 McDonald Drive, Huron, died Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Sioux Valley Hospital at Sioux Falls. His funeral mass will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 21, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Donald Imming officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the mass at the church Tuesday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM Monday evening followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary at the funeral home. Paul William Konst was born on June 29, 1924, to Clemens and Alice (Griswold) Konst at Powell, SD. He attended grade school at Nowlin, SD, and graduated from high school at Philip, SD. He attended 1 year at Black Hills Commercial College at Rapid City. On November 14, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the destroyer USS John L. Williamson and the USS Fayette in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on March 16, 1946. Upon his return home he began a 41-year career with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad as a locomotive engineer, retiring in 1987. On June 1, 1949, Paul married Lois T. Schaefer at Polo, SD. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, and St. Martin Cemetery Board of Directors. He was the sexton/caretaker of St. Martin Cemetery for 33 years. Paul was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, UTU, and BLF&E. He is survived by his wife, Lois of Huron; 9 children, Joseph (Mary) of Cary, NC, James (Solveig) of Tirana, Albania, Michael (Ronda) of Kuwait, Arabian Gulf, Patricia (Mark) Leaman of Springfield, MO, Lyle (Danita) of Rapid City, Paula (Daniel) Pengilly of Omaha, NE, Anthony (Rebecca) of Chandler, AZ, Kenneth (Vickie) of Midland, MI, and Kathleen (Jeff) Kersting of Seoul, South Korea; 1 sister, Dorothy Stahl of Philip; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 sister, Dorris Ballanger; and 1 brother-in-law, Paul Stahl.
