Obituary

Rev. Paul Clark, age 83, of 272 10th Street SW, Huron, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, June 5, at Grace Episcopal Church in Huron with Officiant, Rt. Rev. Creighton Robertson, Bishop of South Dakota; Preaching, Rev. Canon Dr. Robert Wagner, Canon to the Ordinary; and Master of Ceremonies, Rev. George Parmeter, Rector of Grace Church. Burial will be at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery at Mission, SD. Friends may call from 5:00 to 9:00 PM Monday evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Tuesday morning. Paul Austin Clark was born on November 21, 1923, to John Booth Clark and Rebecca (Miller) Clark at Winner, SD. He moved with his family to Mobridge where he attended and graduated from Mobridge High School in 1941 as valedictorian of his class. He attended Trinity College at Hartford, CT, until his entry into the United States Navy on July 1, 1943. He served aboard the heavy cruiser, USS Wichita, in the Pacific Theater during World War II as Optical Officer and Assistant Navigator. After his honorable discharge on June 25, 1946, he resumed his education at Trinity College and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Chemistry. He continued his education at Yale Graduate School at New Haven, CT, and graduated in 1948 with a Master of Arts degree in English Language & Literature. He then attended Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, CT, and graduated with a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1951. On June 7, 1951, Paul married Lois Townsend at Summit, NJ. Paul served in churches at Pine Ridge, SD (1951-1954); Decorah, IA, and surrounding communities (1954-1958); Calvary Cathedral at Sioux Falls (1958-1963; and Huron (1963-1967) where he helped build the new church and parish house (1964). In 1967, Paul took a yearlong sabbatical to study at the School of Education at Boston University. He then served in a church at Cohasset, MA (1968-1970). During this period of time he studied for his doctorate at Boston University. He moved to and served in a church at Rapid City, then returned to Grace Episcopal Church at Huron where he served until his retirement in 1989. Following his retirement, Paul spent several years in Teddington, England, where he served at a church on a part time basis. He then returned to Huron. His many interests included horticulture, listening to music, playing the piano, reading, camping, watching sporting events, playing tennis, English Literature, and ornithology. He is survived by 5 sons, Paul (Sandy) Clark, Jr. of Massachusetts, Stephen Clark of Nebraska, John (Kim) Clark of Georgia, David Clark of Illinois, and Peter (Alice) Clark of Massachusetts; 1 daughter, Kathryn Wilcox of Montana; 6 grandchildren, Robert Wilcox, Christopher Wilcox, Matthew Wilcox, Logan Clark, Tanen Clark, and Michael Clark; 1 brother, John Bill (Helen) Clark of California; 2 sisters, Marjorie (Lester) Westling of California, and Elizabeth Given of Montana; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Kitty King, and Dorothy Mattheisen; and 1 brother, Robert Clark.
