Pat Schmidt, daughter of George L. and Gloria M. (Lobert) Kelley, was born Patricia A. Kelley on December 30, 1952, in Elmhurst, IL. Her father passed away when she was 10 years old. Gloria remarried one-and-a-half years later to Frank B. Klepper. The family then moved to Long Beach, CA.
In 1970 Patricia literally fell for Jim while they were at a roller skating rink. He helped her up and they became friends after they had learned that both of them had artistic families. Jim was serving in the U.S. Navy there at that time. They married three years later on August 4, 1973, in Long Beach and then moved to Spearfish, SD, where they resided for 5 years. In 1980 they settled in Huron, where they were still living at the time of her death. Jim and Pat were happily married for 36 years.
Patricia was a devoted worker for the Huron School Lunch Services for 25 years, developing many warm friendships with students and other folks who were working there. She enjoyed painting, being an excellent artist who specialized in painting animals and nature scenes. Other things that she loved were camping, hiking, fishing, gardening and canning. She also did beautiful crochet work and was an accomplished woodworker repairing and refinishing many beautiful pieces of furniture.
She is survived by her husband, Jim of Huron; two children, Christy A. (Schmidt) Ricks of Sioux Falls, and Brian Schmidt of Huron; one grandchild, Kaleb Ricks; one brother, Kenny Kelley and one sister, Kat Rainy Lynn, both of California; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her stepfather.
