Palmer Soderberg, age 101, of Huron, SD, died Sunday, February 19, 2012, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 24,at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Martin Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation with family present will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a Scripture and Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Palmer Arvid Soderberg, son of Oscar and Lena (Rygg) Soderberg, was born on November 2, 1910, in McCook County, rural Salem, SD. He attended country school near his home. Following his formal education he worked for his father on the family farm. He then moved to Howard, SD, where he worked for the general store until his entry into the U.S. Army on June 6, 1942, during World War II, where he served in the Western Pacific Theater (Southern Philippines). On December 18, 1943, Palmer married Josephine Carmody in San Luis Obispo, CA, where Palmer was stationed at the time. Following his honorable discharge on December 8, 1945, he returned to Howard and worked for the Howard Creamery until 1956. The couple moved to Huron and Palmer worked for Haggar Produce until 1969; then the Farmer's Market Grocery Store until his retirement in 1993 and the age of 83. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish (St. Martin Catholic Church); VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776; American Legion William Reaves Post #7; and the Huron Area Senior Center. His many interests included following the Minnesota Twins, playing cards, yard work, and traveling with Josie. He is survived by his wife, Josie of Huron; 4 children, Kenneth Soderberg of Huron, Connie (Harry) Mansheim of Brookings, Barbara Thomas of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ron (MJ Hedstrom) Soderberg of Golden Valley, MN; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; 1 brother, Vern (Thelma) Soderberg of Northglenn, CO; 1 sister, Dorothy (Eugene) Callies of Howard, SD; 3 sisters-in-law, Regina Sweeney of Sioux Falls, Eileen Nelson of Sioux Falls, and Dorothy Timmons of N. St. Paul, MN; He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 siblings, Hazel (Boyd) Maley, Bernice Soderberg, and Victor Soderberg; 3 brothers-in-law, Henry Sweeney, Martin Nelson, and Lester Timmons; 7 siblings of Josie, Angeline Carmody, Cleo Carmody, Vincent Carmody, Joseph (Irene) Carmody, John (Agnes) Biegger, Raymond (Margaret) Schaefer, and Raymond (Marie) Carmody.
