Palma Polly Aker, age 101, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW and formerly of 1431 Iowa Ave SE, Huron, died Sunday, September 11, 2005 at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Friday, September 16th at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Bethania Cemetery at Trent, SD at a later date. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday morning. The family will be present from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. Palma Aker was born Palma Bergloit Mjoen on April 26, 1904 to Ole and Ellen Kristine (Roaldsen) Mjoen in Moody County, SD. She grew up in the Chester area and graduated from Chester High School and General Beadle College in Madison and also received a degree in Special Education from Mankato, MN. She married Carl Gunderson in June 1927. He died in May 1935. She married Palmer Aker in April 1943. He died in April 1980. She taught in many schools in or around Sioux Falls, Colman, Cavour and Huron, SD; Adams, Pipestone and Lamberton, MN. She has lived in Huron since 1970. Polly celebrated her 101st birthday this year. After a long career of teaching she volunteered for the hospital auxiliary and was a charter member of the Sons of Norway, charter member of the Huron Senior Center RSVP, a member of the South Dakota Retired Teachers, a member of the American Lutheran Church and altar Guild. She also sang with the Choraleers when they traveled to Washington DC. She was also a member of the ARC and held a term as president. She is survived by a daughter Emily Ann Schneider of Seattle, WA; a son Richard (Sonja) Gunderson of Huron; stepchildren, Jewel Aker of Slinger, WI, Maxine Steinfeldt of Mitchell, SD, Jim Cookie Aker of Maynardsville, TN, Shirley (Don) Turgeon of Wichita, KS, and Verlyn (Addie) Aker of Selbyville, DE; grandchildren, Mary (Chris) Lawrence of Seattle, WA, John (Patti) Schneider, of WI, Dawn Olmstead of South Sioux City, NE, Lori (Keith) Murphy of Huron, and Mark (Laurie) Gunderson of Sioux Falls, SD; great grandchildren, Annie, George and Erica Lawrence; Melissa, Richard and John Schneider; Noah Dommer; Natalie, Jamaica and Carly Adams; Camma, and Beau (Leah) Murphy; Lexi, Chelsi and Jordan Gunderson; great-great grandchildren, Shelbi, McKennah, Mazzie and Hudson Murphy; and a sister Rhoda Park of Madison, SD. She also has many step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husbands Carl Gunderson and Palmer Aker, her parents, stepsons Russell Aker and Clayton Aker, three-step grandchildren, and a sister Sena Spear and a brother Oscar Mjoen.
