Obituary

Otto Ott Olson, age 87, of 813 Canary Lane, Huron, died Sunday, December 11, 2005, at his home. His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 15, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Artesian with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon after 3:00 PM and Wednesday evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:30 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home with a Prayer Service at 5:30 PM. Otto Alvin Olson was born on January 6, 1918, to Joseph and Ida (Moseson) Olson, at Artesian, SD. He grew up on the Olson homestead and attended a nearby rural school. Otto was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Artesian where his great grandfather, Ole J. Norem, was a charter member. His parents died when he was a young boy and he lived with his brothers and sisters on the family farm. Later he worked on a railroad at Aurora, IL, until he was called to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He was inducted into military service on September 28, 1942, and served with the 96th Infantry in the South Pacific Theater. He was awarded a Purple Heart after being severely wounded during combat on Leyte Island. He was honorably discharged on December 16, 1945, at Ft. Lewis, WA. He worked as a carpenters apprentice at Cannon Beach, OR, before returning to the family home at Artesian where he worked with his brother, Orlando and family. On August 26, 1951, Otto married Edith Faye Lager at First Lutheran Church in Artesian. They bought a farm near Artesian where they lived for 28 years. Otto enjoyed working with livestock and always had his favorite riding horse. He served as a council member at First Lutheran Church for many years and was very active in the American Legion Post #47 of Artesian serving twice as Commander. He also served on the Benedict Township Board, was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the DAV. In 1979, Otto and Edith moved to Huron. They became members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and he joined the William-Reaves American Legion Post #7 of Huron and Past Commanders. After his retirement, Otto and Edith enjoyed traveling, and visiting most of the 50 states. He is survived by his wife, Edith of Huron; 2 sisters, Edna M. Olson of Sioux Falls, and Irene Eining of Huron; 1 brother, Leonard Lyle Olson of New Boston, TX; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 sister, Alice Olson; and 2 brothers, Orlando Olson and Victor Olson.
