Opal V. Pier, age 93, of Cavour, died Monday April 22, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in De Smet, SD. Her memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the American Lutheran Church in Huron, SD, with a private family burial at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Iroquois, SD. Her visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday night. Opal V. Peskey, the daughter of Arthur and Emma (Schwederske) Peskey, was born on August 3, 1919, in Beadle County. She attended country school. Opal married Gilbert "Gib" Pier on October 5, 1940, at Redfield, SD. In 1945, they moved to a farm south of Cavour and farmed there until 2003 when they moved to Huron. Opal was a member of both the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Iroquois and the American Lutheran Church in Huron, SD. Opal was very active in both church circles and was always ready and willing to help with whatever was needed at Church. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and taking care of her family. Grateful for having shared in Opal's life are her three sons: Gary (Jackie) Pier of Huron, SD, Craig Pier of Cavour, SD, and Steve (Joni) Pier of Yankton, SD; four grandchildren, Rhonda (Scott) Klinkel of Aberdeen, SD, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Bigrigg of Davenport, IA, Emily Pier, of Vermillion, SD, and Andrew Pier of Sioux Falls, SD; grandson-in-law, Barry Cranston of Huron, SD; two step grandchildren, Stephanie Stearns of Sioux Falls, SD, and Douglas Stearns of Brookings, SD; four great grandchildren, Jennifer (Chad) Letvin of Golden Valley, MN, Chad Klinkel of Aberdeen, SD, Zackary Cranston of Huron, SD, and Logan Bigrigg of Davenport, IA; sister, Delores (George) Sellent of Almena, WI; and several nieces and nephews. Opal was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gilbert in 2005; granddaughter, Brenda Cranston in 2010; and brother, Hillard Peskey.
