Opal Brooks, age 86, of Huron, SD, died Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at Avera Westkota Manor in Wessington Springs, SD. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 15 at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, August 14 from 5-7 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5-6 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Opal Brooks was born Opal Wanda Van Hoever, daughter of Jakob and Mildred (Althoff) Van Hoever, on July 11, 1928, in rural Long Prairie, MN, Todd County. On October 20, 1945, Opal married Donald Brooks in Long Prairie where they lived for a few years. In August 1959 they moved with their family to Huron where Opal worked outside of the home for most of her life. Opal is survived by 5 daughters, Esther (Wayne) Walker of Wessington Springs, Elaine Dargatz of Nemo, SD, Eunice Alexander of Huron, Eva (Les) Voorhees of Harrisburg, SD, and Evonne (Roger) Culver of Rapid City; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald on December 26, 1984; 2 infant sons, Jakey and Everett; 4 brothers, Dan, Roy, Lloyd, and John; 6 sisters, Ora, Dena, Grace, Edna, Mary and Martha; 3 sons-in-law, Lee Voeller, Steve Alexander, and Gene Dargatz.
