Obituary

Oliver O. Zimmerman, age 89, of Forestburg, SD, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket, SD. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2014 at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, SD, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Huron, SD. Visitation with family present will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the Welter Funeral Home on Monday. Oliver Zimmerman, the son of Otto and Lillie (Maurer) Zimmerman, was born on February 25, 1925 on the family farm near Forestburg, SD. He attended school at the Maurer Country School. Oliver worked for Huron Steel Construction for a year before returning to the family farm. Oliver farmed for many years and retired in 2010, but he never completely gave up farming. Oliver married Grace Hay on October 19, 1949 at the United Methodist Church in Huron, SD. The couple made their home on the family farm near Forestburg, SD Oliver was a member of the Huron Coin and Stamp Collecting Club for 20 years. He enjoyed going on summer vacation and fossil hunting with his family and friends. Oliver drove the shuttle bus for the South Dakota State Fair for 46 years and was awarded a plaque from the Fair in recognition of his many years of service. Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Grace of Forestburg, SD; his son Douglas (Linda) Zimmerman of Huron, SD; daughter, Connie (Todd) Paye of Cavour, SD; three grandchildren: Brent, Brennan, and Kelcie Paye; step-granddaughter, Laura (Josh) Smith of Harrisburg, SD ;step- great-grandson, Eli Smith; two step- great-granddaughters, Liz and Kadie Smith; two sisters, Virginia Baysinger of Huron, SD and Violet (Barry) Bell of Woonsocket, SD; sister-in-law, Kathleen Zimmerman; cousins, Delbert and Carl Pearson; and many nieces and nephews. Oliver was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandra Zimmerman in 1979; grandson, Dylan Paye;brother, Arnold Zimmerman; step-grandson, Alex Pettit; and brother-in-law Harold (Lug) Baysinger.
