Norman Mason, age 82, of Huron, SD, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, in Huron. His funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 9, at Welter Funeral Home with burial 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 10, at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday afternoon one hour prior to the service. Norman David Mason, son of David and Alice (Waller) Mason, was born on May 9, 1931, in Pierre, SD. Norman married Rosemary C. Cook and they have lived in Huron. Norman grew up with a love for the open road. On August 16, 1951 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he received special training as an airman, in construction, mechanics, electronics monitoring and communication, and atomic defense training. He was honorably discharged on July 26, 1957. Norman then began farming, later owning Mason Transmissions, and Mason Provisions (along haul trucking company). He retired from trucking and then went to work as a master mechanic for NTA until his retirement. Norman was privileged to receive the notable nationally recognized Semi-Truck Show Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, racing figure 8 cars, and go-karts, boating, and most of all working on trucks, as well as anything mechanical that he could fix. Norman is survived by 3 daughters, Sheryl (Blair) Meyers of Huron, Pamela Ochsner of Huron, and Susan (Gary) Bougger of Columbus, NE; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; 1 sister, Shirley McLaughlin of Desert Hot Springs, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosemary on February 22, 2010; 1 son, David Mason.
