Obituary

Norma J. Whitney, age 80, of Huron, SD, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Huron, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, February 23, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Norma J. Linderman, the daughter of Leonard and Mary (Erickson) Linderman, was born on November 13, 1933 in Huron, SD. Norma attended school and graduated from Huron High School in 1951. In her younger years, Norma worked for the Armour Company in Huron where she met Clayton her future husband. Norma was in charge of the Women's clothing and Baby Clothing Departments at the Kmart store in Huron for 17 years. She also worked for the Huron nursing home as a cook for 7 years. Norma married Clayton Whitney on March 22, 1952 at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. A Sealing was performed at the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on June 28, 1958 in Logan, UT. Norma was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Huron. Norma's life was based on a life of service. Norma was a member of the Church Relief Society and served as the Church organist. Norma and Clayton also served as missionaries at the Bismarck Temple in Bismarck, ND for three years. Having been a cancer survivor herself, Norma was always willing to visit and provide support to other cancer patients for over forty years. Norma enjoyed cooking, genealogy and family history. Norma loved music, in addition to playing the organ, she played the clarinet in the Huron Municipal Band. Her family was her greatest love and she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband, Clayton of Huron, SD; her six children: Steve (Maxine) Whitney of Great Falls, MT, Don Whitney of Huron, SD, Janine (Bill) Taylor of Huron, SD, Michael (Karen) Whitney of Mitchell, SD, Tom Whitney of Springville, UT, and Bonnie (Wade) Bergquist of Huron, SD; 30 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Linda (Ernest) Kartchner of Porterville, CA; brother, Larry (Mary) Linderman of Lake Villa, IL; and many cousins nieces and nephews. Norma was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents.
