Nellie J. Bye, age 89, of Huron died January 1, 2012 at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. Her funeral will be 11:00 am Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with a 2:00 pm burial in Clark Center Lutheran Cemetery in Clark. Visitation with family present will be from 10-11 am Thursday before the service. Nellie Johanna Bye was born on November 17, 1922 in Fitjar, Norway to Knute and Anna Martina (Sorfundon) Kverne. At the age of 5, she immigrated with her family to the United States, going through Ellis Island, before riding a train cross country to reunite with her father, who had immigrated earlier to Clark, SD. Nellie graduated from Clark High School and then received her certificate from Watertown Beauty Academy in March of 1944. Nellie married Leslie Bye on February 19, 1950 in Clark. The couple later moved to Huron. She ran her beauty salon out of her home for many years. Nellie enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, crossword puzzles, bowling, and especially the Minnesota Twins. Nellie was a very active member of American Lutheran Church, serving as co-chairwoman for the Spring Luncheon and the Fall Festival for many years. She was also a member of Sons of Norway, the Republican Party, a 25 year member of Extension Club, and a 20 year member of the Huron Lioness Club Nellie is survived by sisters-in-law, Irene Kverne of Rapid City, Dorothy (Ted) VanKempen of Bloomington, MN; brother-in-law, Don (Glenna) Bye of Midwest City, Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leslie in 1988; sister, Anna (Charles) Wolkow; brothers, Palmer and Keith (Willaree); one niece and one nephew.
