Nellie Burg, age 93, of Huron died Friday, January 23, 2015 at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron. Her memorial service will be 1:00 pm Monday, January 26, 2015 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial in St. Wilfred Catholic Cemetery in Woonsocket. Memorial visitation will be from noon until the service time on Monday, January 26, 2015 at the funeral home. Nellie Marie Burg was born on February 23, 1921, in Huron to Mads "Chris" and Vera (Rumford) Paulson. She attended school in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1939. Nellie married Howard Burg on June 10, 1943 in Huron. They made their home on a farm, first near Winfred, then in the Artesian area. The couple moved to Huron in 1972 when her husband retired from farming. They were the first tenants in Park Square Apartments, living there until December of 2000 when they both entered Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Nellie truly enjoyed her 14 years at Violet Tschetter, attending many activities and especially liked playing bingo and going to music programs and church services. Nellie was well known for her holiday fruit cakes sharing them with many friends and neighbors, and she loved hosting large family gatherings when they were on the farm and after retirement. Nellie was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, Degree of Honor, and had been active in PTA and the American Cancer Society. She was also an over 40-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, sponsoring and befriending many people throughout her years. Nellie is survived by two daughters, Diana Nelson of Sioux Falls, and Bette (Merle) Poppen of De Smet; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Burg in 2001; and brother, Lyle (Bernice) Paulson.
