Obituary

Myrtle Brush, age 97, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 4, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Channell officiating. Burial will be at Altoona Cemetery, rural Hitchcock. Friends may call this Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Saturday afternoon. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:00 PM this Friday evening at the funeral home. The family prefers memorials. Myrtle Brush was born Myrtle Alta Saugstad on July 9, 1909, to Oscar and Crete (Littlefield) Saugstad in Hitchcock, SD. She attended grade school in Cornwall Township, one year of high school in Hitchcock, and then attended Redfield High School. On December 24, 1927, Myrtle married John Brush, Jr. They lived on a farm southeast of Hitchcock for a few years before moving to Huron where Myrtle worked at the Red Owl Store. In 1952, they moved to Artesian, SD, where they owned a tavern. In 1957, Myrtle moved back to Huron and worked at J.C. Pennys. She retired from Pennys in March of 1973. In September of 1975, Myrtle worked at Ravens until it closed in June of 1982. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Myrtle loved to crochet and had made over 600 names, several tablecloths and doilies, and loved to play cards. She is survived by 4 grandsons, Rick (Kandice) Boomsma of Hitchcock, David (Judy) Boomsma of Wolsey, Douglas (Peggy) Boomsma of Frankfort, and Nicklous Brush of Texas; 2 granddaughters, Debra Boomsma of Salt Lake City, UT, and Lisa Boomsma of Wessington; 9 great grandchildren, Jennifer (Layne) Peterson, Jeff (Tracy) Boomsma, Tim Boomsma, Derrik Boomsma, Jay (Heidi) Boomsma, Kim (Ryan) Bergh, Ryan (Barb) Boomsma, Brad (Amanda) Boomsma, and Kayla Boomsma; 16 great great grandchildren; 1 brother, Wayne (MaryLou) Saugstad of Rapid City; 1 cousin, Ferne Schroeder of Yankton; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her daughter, Yvonne Bonnie Boomsma; her son, Donovan; 4 brothers, Edwin, Carl, Lewis, and Dale Saugstad; 3 sisters, Olive Dodd, Mabel Gilbert, and Eva Mae Silvey.
