Obituary

Murray Heavirland, age 86, of Rapid City, SD, and formerly of Huron, died Monday, February 19, 2007, at the Golden Living Center-Black Hills in Rapid City. His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Monday, March 5, at First United Methodist Church in Huron with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening, March 4, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron or prior to the service at the church Monday morning. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Sunday evening, March 4, at the funeral home. Murray R. Heavirland was born on August 21, 1920, to Asa and Lydia (Simons) Heavirland in Clark County, SD. He was the second of four children. He attended Thorp Consolidated School in Clark County for 6 years. In 1934, his family moved to a farm in Butte County. He finished grade school at a rural school in Butte County and attended high school in Nisland for 3 years. He moved to Esmond, SD, with his family in 1938 and graduated from Iroquois High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army from January 22, 1943 to February 14, 1946. He was honorably discharged as a TSgt in 1946 following his service as a member of the American Occupation Forces in Japan. On March 28, 1945, Murray married Lavora Johnsen from Wessington. Three children were born to this union: Robert in 1947, Larry in 1948, and Joyce in 1953. Murray farmed north of Wessington from 1946 to 1955 when the family moved to Huron. He worked for Montgomery Ward and Company from 1955 to 1961, then for Prairie Supply, and Tractor Supply for nearly 5 years. He worked for Sandvigs Prairie Supply as co-manager until his retirement on August 31, 1984. His wife, Lavora, died on April 20, 1978. On June 5, 1982, Murray married Bernice Lind at Huron. They traveled extensively during their time together. Bernice died on April 14, 1988. At the age of 72, Murray started his own business Murrays Supply which he operated until the time of his death. Due to failing health he moved to Rapid City in July of 2005 to be near his daughter. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Huron, a 50-year member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7 in Huron, and a 47-year member of the Elks Club in Huron. He is survived by 3 children, Robert (Vicki) Heavirland of North Branch, MN, Larry Heavirland of Mitchell, SD, and Joyce (John) Schlim of Rapid City, SD; 2 grandsons, Patrick (Heather) Heavirland of Rush City, MN, and Alan (Alison) Heavirland of Seward, AK; 2 great grandsons, Julian and Andrew; 1 sister, Irene (Hiland) Aughenbaugh of Rapid City, SD; 1 brother, Philip Heavirland and special friend Andi Ress of Kaneohe, HI; 4 stepchildren, Sandra Githens of Des Moines, IA, Robert Lind of Corvallis, OR, Linda Buck of Oakes, ND, and Donna Young of St. Charles, MO; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; 1 daughter-in-law, Linda Heavirland of North Branch, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to both of his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; and 1 brother, Kenneth Heavirland.
