Obituary

Monica Kearns, age 99, of 1345 Michigan Ave. SW, Huron, died Friday, December 2, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral mass will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 13, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the mass at the church Tuesday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in memory of Monica. Monica Kearns was born Monica Catherine Fleming on March 4, 1906, to John Thomas and Mary E. (Mueller) Fleming at Hartington, NE. She attended Holy Trinity Catholic School in Hartington and graduated in 1924. Monica was a bookkeeper at Cedar County News and the Goetz Hardware Store, both in Hartington. On November 6, 1933, Monica married John Richard 'Dick' Kearns at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. After their marriage they lived at Rock Valley, IA, until 1943 when they moved to Sioux Falls. They moved to Huron in 1946. She was employed at the Daily Plainsman as a proofreader for a number of years until her retirement in the Fall of 1964. She was a long standing member of St. Martin's Catholic Church, Altar Society, St. Catherine's Band, CCD assistant, and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed crafts, baking and candy making which she shared generously with her friends. She became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home on November 6, 1998, where everyone enjoyed her cheery disposition. She is survived by 1 son, J. Thomas (Linda) Kearns of Superior, CO; 2 daughters, Mary Kay Costain of Champlin, MN, and Joan (Darrel) King of Watertown, SD; 7 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Richard "Dick" on September 8, 1990; 1 son-in-law, Robert Costain; 1 daughter-in-law, Sandra Kearns; 2 brothers; and 1 sister.
