Mildred Merriam, age 93, of Huron SD, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 29, at Huron Christian Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Mildred Merriam was born Mildred Evelyn Clawson, daughter of Chester Arthur and Minnie Martha (Krause) Clawson, on July 31, 1918, in Miner County near Vilas, SD. She attended rural school in Miner County and high school in Vilas and Howard, graduating from Howard High School in 1935. Mildred attended General Beadle Teachers College in Madison for 1 year where she received her first grade-teaching certificate for elementary grades. She taught for 4 years in Miner County. In 1940 Mildred married Robert Merriam. They farmed in Miner County until 1960 when they moved to Huron. To this union 4 children were born. Mildred attended Huron College and received a BS degree in elementary education in 1970. She taught for 8 years in Grant Township and 13 years in the third/fourth grades in Alpena. She retired in 1982. She was a member of Huron Christian Church, and Beadle County Retired Teachers Association. Her many interests included reading, flowers, numerous card clubs, and volunteering wherever needed especially at the State Fairgrounds Museum, SunQuest Healthcare Center, and Jefferson School library. Mildred is survived by 2 sons, Allen (Wanelda) Merriam of Huron, and Rick (Gloria) Merriam of Pierre; former daughter-in-law, Nan Corneilson of Gillette, WY; 11 grandchildren, Rod Merriam, Roger Merriam, Troy Merriam, Ryan Merriam, Tyler Merriam, Curtis Merriam, Carmen Heer, Crystal Nichols, Susan Leiker, Tricia Sundeen, and Sandy Sherrodd; 22 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert in 1977; 2 sons, Curtis as an infant, and Gary in 1997; granddaughter, Hope; and brother, Chester Clawson.
