Mildred Haffner, age 97, of 1251 Arizona Ave. SW, Huron, died Thursday, July 14, 2005, (3 days short of her 98th birthday) at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 19, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Allen Sager and Ann Puterbaugh officiating. A private family graveside service will be held prior to the memorial service. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home. The family will be present from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Mildred Fenner was born on July 17, 1907, to Adam and Agnes (Piehl) Fenner at Esmond, SD. She lived most of her life on a farm near Cavour. She graduated from Huron High School and attended Huron College where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse when she was 18 years old, driving a horse & buggy to school. Her younger sister, Ruth was one her students. On June 30, 1934, during the Great Depression, Mildred married Sam E. Haffner at Watertown, SD. Mildred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed many crafts including quilting, ceramics, knitting, and crocheting. She was an avid player of word games and puzzles. She helped organize the Pearl Creek Boosters 4-H Club in the 1940s, served as Postmistress at Cavour during the 1950s, and a past member of the Pearl Creek Township School Board. She is survived by 1 son, Don (Sally) Haffner of Cincinnati, OH; 1 daughter, Jan (Gary) Morris of Sioux Falls; 4 grandchildren, Michelle (Matt Jarpe) Morris, Melanie (Neil) Putnam, Heidi (Dave) Barta, and Bill (Tracy) Haffner; and 8 great grandchildren who were a great joy to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam on January 16, 1982; an infant daughter, JoAnn Ruth Haffner; 3 brothers and their spouses, Merritt (Bertha) Fenner, Herbert (Emma) Fenner, and Otis (Lynn) Fenner; 4 sisters and their spouses, Lelah (Fay) Townsley, Ruth (George) Carlson, Ella (Otis) Dover, and Alice (Lovell) Johnson.
