Mildred V. Giordano, age 99, of Huron, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2016 at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, with burial at St. Martins Cemetery.
Her visitation will be from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 14 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with a Prayer Service and Rosary to begin at 6:30 p.m.; or visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Mildred V. Van Verth, the daughter of Frank B. and Alice M. (Harris) Van Verth, was born on November 17, 1917 in Baileyville, KS. At the age of three, Mildred and her family moved to Gregory, SD. She graduated from Gregory High School in 1936 and attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, SD. Upon completion of Business College, Mildred went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) at White River, SD and Minneapolis, MN. She transferred to Huron and began working for the USDA Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC) in June of 1945. Mildred retired in 1971 as the South Dakota Administrative Assistant for the FCIC.
While living in Huron, Mildred was introduced to an Italian immigrant named Felix Giordano. Mildred married Felix Giordano (an employee of the Huron Bureau of Reclamation) on October 29, 1955 in Huron, SD.
Mildred was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish for many years. She was also a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Huron Area Senior Center. Mildred enjoyed dancing and going out to dinner with her friends. She loved traveling and remembered fondly the many cruises all around the world she had taken. Mildred was a very lovely woman, a generous and supportive person.
Grateful for having shared in Mildred's life are her four nieces. Beverly Van Verth, Sharon (Jim) James, and Vicki (Toby) Berberich all of Des Moines, IA, and Mary Jo McDermott and her two daughters, Sara Jo (Ryan) Volk of Walnut Creek, CA and Molly McDermott of San Francisco, CA; two nephews, James Van Verth of Aptos, CA and Gary Van Verth of Des Moines, IA; two great-nephews, Joey Berberich and Cole Van Verth; her step-grandchild, Heather Martin; several step-great-grandchildren; and her dear friends, Hazel and Lyle Rowen and Nancy Balvin.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Felix on January 27, 1963; three brothers: Francis J., Gene, and Harold W. Van Verth; sister, Helen V. Busits; and step-daughter, Catherine O'Conner; sister-in-law, Nora Van Verth; step-grandchild, Holly Allen; and dear friend, Harriet Beach.
