Michael Mallon, age 73, of Huron died Thursday, July 30, 2015 at his home. Following his wishes his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be 2:00 pm Monday, August 3, 2015 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with a celebration of Mike's life to follow at Hurst's Corner. Memorial visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home. Michael Dale Mallon, son of Gail and Marie (May) Mallon, was born on September 1, 1941 at the Sprague Hospital in Huron, SD. He attended Valley #1 country school and then moved to Adair, Iowa with his parents and graduated from Adair High School in 1960. In 1961, Mike joined the US Navy serving on the ice breaker, the USS Burton Island, in the Antarctica traveling from the North Pole to the South Pole. He was honorably discharged in 1965. During his military service, Mike married Donna Engelhart and to this union a daughter, Denise, was born. After his service he returned to Huron and married Sharon Jones and to this union a son, Travis, was born. While living and working in MN he married Carol Beckler. Mike began working on train engines for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad in Huron until 1974 then transferred to Mason City, IA. He worked for the Crystal Sugar Beet factory in Renville, MN repairing and doing maintenance on train engines. He retired from there in 1995 and moved back to Huron. He worked for Huron Manufacturing for 3 years and Dakota Reclamation (Overbuilt) for 1 year. Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends. Mike is survived by two sons, Travis Mallon, Huron and Blake Piipke of Wilmer, MN: one daughter, Denise Gillman of WA; one grandson, Daniel Gillman of Huron; one step-son, Rob (Lea) Swanson of Adel, IA; one step-grand son, Dustin Swanson; one step-granddaughter, Cassidy Swanson; one step-great-granddaughter, Aubrey; two brothers, Pat (Kay) Mallon and Ben (Carolyn) Mallon all of Huron; one sister, Brenda (Jeff) Dillenburg, of Creston, IA; one uncle, Dale May of Huron; one aunt, Eva Heller of CO; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, Clifford; one niece, Amy Mallon; many aunts and uncles.
