Obituary

Merlin "Nob" Currier, 88, of Huron, SD, died Thursday, April 14, 2016 at SunQuest Healthcare Center.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron with Fr. Cathal Gallagher and Fr. Terry Anderson presiding. Burial will be at St. William Catholic Cemetery in rural Yale, SD.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-7 pm with the family present from 6-7 pm followed by scripture prayer service and time of sharing beginning at 7 pm at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church.

Merlin Dale Currier was born June 2, 1927 in Kingsbury County near Bancroft, SD to Valentine O. and Margaret B. (Reeter) Currier.  Nob attended Engelking Country School and Bancroft High School.

On August 25, 1948, Nob was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Joan L. Kornder in the Cavour Catholic Parsonage.  To this union, four children were born.  Nob and Joan made their home in the Bancroft area working on the family farm.  He was self-employed as a livestock trucker for 27 years and owned and operated the gas station in Bancroft.  He was also a livestock buyer at sale barns for Armours.  The couple moved to Iroquois in 1969.  In 1974, Nob sold his trucking operation and began work as a maintenance man for the City of Iroquois.  Nob and Joan moved to Stickney where Joan was a Postmaster for 10 years and moved back to Iroquois in 1993.  Nob took great pride in manicuring his yard as well as keeping his vehicles cleaned and polished.

Nob was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church in Bancroft.  In 1973, Nob joined the catholic faith.  He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish at the time of his death.

Nob is survived by his wife of 68 1/2 years, Joan; his three children, Mary (Dennis) Cundy, Janey (Mike) Rowan, Dick and Cookie Currier; his grandchildren, Valerie (Cundy) Mitchell and Tom Josten, RJ and Michaela Currier, Lacey (Rowan) and Steve Fryberger, Rochelle (Cundy) and Tom Sweetman, and Stacie (Currier) Valencia; great grandchildren, Jyssica (Mitchell) and Derik Laddusaw, Bobby Mitchell and Casey Mitchell, Kaylie and Katyn Currier, Cooper and Mattlyn Fryberger, Addison and Brooklyn Valencia, Cameron, and Devon Johnson, Liam and Evelyn Sweetman; great-great grandchildren, Bryton and Bryckyn Laddusaw; o ne sister, Donna Dirksen; one brother-in-law, Roger (Joy) Kornder; two sister's-in-law, Nikki Perry and Anne Olson; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Nob was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann; a grandson, Matt Rowan; his brother, Kenneth and sister-in-law Pauline Currier; three brothers-in-law; Delbert Dirksen, Don Kornder, and Dick Perry; and his parents and grandparents.

The family will be gathering at the Rowan residence,
1853 Lampert Drive in Huron on Tuesday and Wednesday.
