Merle A. Felderman, age 92, of Doland, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. His memorial service will be 10:30 am Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Doland High School Auditorium with burial in the Doland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Merle's family requests memorial be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Doland or the South Dakota School of Mines-Athletic Scholarship fund. Merle Alexander Felderman was born April 23, 1920 to Alex and Clara (Schumacher) Felderman on the family farm south of Doland. Merle was confirmed in Redeemer Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member. He graduated from DHS in 1938 where he was a letter winner and proud member of the State Championship basketball team in 1937. Merle served his country in the United States Navy from March 25th, 1942 to December 2, 1945 in Hawaii. After returning from service Merle married Donna Jean Baggesgard on July 26th, 1949 in Doland. They were blessed with three children; Barbara, Gary, and Tom. One of his greatest joys was farming as a family. Merle was a humble man never complaining. He was particularly proud of his family and was very involved in their lives. Whether it was driving them home from school or supporting them at local band/choir concerts and sporting events,Merle was there with a smile on his face and a few pointers to give. Not only was Merle a devout Doland fan, but he was also a South Dakota School of Mines Hardrocker fan, not missing many of his daughter Barb's basketball games in 31 years. The word "grand" in grandpa was Merle. Merle touched many hearts, was loved, and admired by many. Merle died five months to the day after the love of his life, Donna had died. They are together again! Merle is survived by his children, Barbara Felderman of Rapid City, Gary (Ruth) Felderman of Doland, Tom (Diane) Felderman of Doland; four grandchildren, Chad (Mati) Felderman, Jill (Jon) Melby, Dana (Chantel Spurgin) Felderman, Eric Felderman ; five great grandchildren, Noah and Jaxson Felderman, Taylor and Hudson Melby, Kynley Felderman; two step grandchildren, Chris (Teresa) Person, Angela (Erik) Ritter ; five step greatgrandchildren, Abbey, Chloe, and Hayden Person, Zoe and Lucas Ritter ; two brothers, John Felderman of Kerrville, TX and Robert Felderman of Doland ; one sister-in-law Lorraine (Wes) Jarman of Huron, and many nieces and nephews. Merle was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Donna on December 15, 2011; and two brothers, Wilbur Felderman and Everett Felderman; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Felderman and Sara Felderman.
