Melvin (Mel) Youngerman, age 81, of Huron, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015 at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
His funeral mass will be at 10:30 AM Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Friday.
Melvin Youngerman the son of Dewey and Laura (Schwiesow) Youngerman was born on March 30, 1934 in Huron, SD. He attended school and graduated from Huron High School. Mel served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
On February 1, 1953, Mel married Jeanette (Jean) Johnson at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. They lived in Huron until 1955 when they moved to California and then in 1968 they moved back to Huron. Mel worked as the Civil Defense Director for the City of Huron for many years until his retirement.
Mel was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. He was also a member of the Toastmasters Club. Mel enjoyed painting. Many People will remember Mel's and Jean's Candy and Carmelcorn Shop on Dakota Avenue in downtown Huron.
Grateful for having shared in Mel's life are his son, Mark (Roda) Youngerman of Anchorage AK; 3 grandchildren, Darci Borquez of Vancouver, WA, and Marksteven Youngerman, and Katherine Youngerman of Anchorage , AK; great grandchild, Enzo Borquez; brother, George ( Joan) Youngerman of Cando, ND; and his nieces and nephews.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jeanette (Jean) in 2006; sister, Irene Youngerman; and two brothers, Delbert Youngerman and Dewey Youngerman.
