Melvin Songer, age 72, of Huron, SD, died Friday, January 24, 2014, at Huron Regional Medical Center. His body has been cremated and burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date at Ideal Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Melvin E. Songer, son of Raymond and Hazel (Baughman) Songer, was born on July 28, 1941, in rural Iroquois, SD. He moved with his parents to various farms in South Dakota. In 1963, Melvin married Rose Powell. Later in life they divorced. In 1997, Melvin married Patricia Moeding. Melvin worked for Dressed Beef, Cooks Seed Company, Flanery's, a few area farmers, and DCS Shag Service. He retired in 1998 due to ill health. He is survived by 5 children, Darrell (Kari) Songer of Huron, Doug Songer of Huron, Don Songer of Huron, Duane (Ruth) Songer of Huron, and Carolyn (Kurt) Wallace of Arlington, SD; 1 step-son, James Al Moeding of Pukwana, SD; 14 grandchildren, Bridgette, Brittany, Cody, Belinda, Wyatt, Dalton, Samantha, Blaine, Nikita, Briana, Kaylee, Kendra, Kyann, and Chris; 7 great grandchildren; 5 sisters, Geneva (Duke) Leetch of Huron, Charlotte Stas and her special friend Sterling Totton of Mt. Vernon, Leota Story of Bassett, NE, Iola Hamilton of Tucson, AZ, and Velda Schnellbach of Sioux Falls; 4 brothers, Keith Songer of Huron, Wayne (Barb) Songer of Huron, Larry Songer of Huron, and Calvin Songer of Norfolk, NE; 2 sisters-in-law, Linda Woodfork of Huron, and Ruth Nickle of Huron; numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Daniel Songer in 1964; his second wife, Patty on June 2, 2007; a great grandson, Ethan Songer in 2009; 5 brothers; 1 daughter-in-law, Jodi; 3 brothers-in-law, Jasper Story, Everett Hamilton, and Eddie Schnellbach.
