Melvin Schorzmann, age 88, of Wessington Springs, SD and formerly of Alpena, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Avera Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs.

His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 21 at the Alpena United Parish in Alpena with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 2-4 PM on Sunday at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with a prayer service to begin at 3:30; or visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Melvin Delmer Schorzmann was born on January 19, 1931 to parents Albert and Martha (Horst) Schorzmann. He grew up in the Alpena area attending country schools until the 8 ^th grade. Melvin joined the United States Army in 1952, serving in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1954, achieving the rank of Corporal.

Melvin co-owned and operated the Alpena East Side Service for 34 years, which was a full-service gas station and repair shop. He then worked for the Alpena Coop for 16 years.

Melvin married Alice Heins on October 4, 1975 in Alpena. Alice passed away in 2017.

Melvin enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He also loved to play Bingo and sing in the choir. Melvin enjoyed baking apple pies and pumpkin bread. Melvin was a member of the American Legion and the United Parish Church of Alpena.

Melvin is survived by his stepsons, Clifford (Janene) Jager of Mitchell, Luverne (Linda) Jager of Wessington Springs, and Daryle (Jane) Jager of Urbandale, IA; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brother Leonard Schorzmann of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Alice; four brothers, Edgar, Victor, Elmer and Gordon Schorzmann; and two sisters, Lenora Keelin and Arlene Mees-Schnabel.
