Obituary

Melvin Beck, age 82, of 1601 Ohio Ave SW, Huron, and formerly of Wessington, died Sunday, June 18, 2006 at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, June 22nd at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Dale Sattgast officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. The family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Melvin Beck was born on February 20, 1924, to Kai and Helen (Hartmann) Beck near Wessington, SD. He attended rural schools in the Wessington area and graduated from Wessington High School. On October 26, 1947, Melvin married Tressie Horsley at St. Johns Lutheran Church at Wolsey. They farmed and ranched 5 miles north of Wessington until September 1998 when they moved to Huron where they have lived since that time. In the 1990s Melvin and Tressie wintered at Yuma, Arizona. Melvin was one of the founding members of the Concordia Lutheran Church at Wessington and was a member for many years. When he moved to Huron he became a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. He always put his family first and he enjoyed fishing as a hobby. He is survived by his wife Tressie Beck of Huron; on son, Eugene Beck of Huron; one daughter Janet Taber of Chamberlain; 5 grandchildren, Lori Skoglund, Cindy Jo Taber, Kristi Clement, Cory Taber and Hollie Taber and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Virgil Taber. Casket bearers will be Richard Thomas, Kenneth Wedge, Craig Vanasperen, Kerry Stiner, Dave Padderud and Scott Alexander.
