Melanie Haugen, age 51, of 895 12th St. SW, Huron, died Sunday, September 12, 2004, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, September 16, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Christopher Ascher and Rev. Dale Sattgast officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Welter Funeral Home. Melanie Haugen was born Melanie Anita Clausen on February 6, 1953, to Archie and Sue (Hurrell) Clausen at Pipestone, MN. As a small child she moved with her family to Hill City, SD, where she grew up, attended school, and graduated from Hill City High School in 1971. She lived and worked in the Black Hills area until moving to Huron in 1989. She attended and graduated from Huron University in 1993 with a degree in criminal justice. She worked as a counselor for Community Counseling Services in Huron from 1993 until December of 2003. On October 20, 1996, Melanie married Lee Haugen at Huron. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. Her many interests included gardening, stained glass, quilting, sewing, crocheting, tie-dying, candle and soap making, and photography. She is survived by her husband, Lee of Huron; 5 children, Timothy Ross of Huron, Joshua Stark of Rapid City, Kara Stark of Rapid City, Bryan Stark of Huron, and Brenna Stark of Huron; 1 granddaughter, Skylar Jade Ross; her parents, Archie and Sue Clausen of Huron; and 1 sister, Vanessa Klich of Huron. She was preceded in death by her grandparents; and many uncles and aunts.
