Obituary

Maynard Muilenburg, age 86, of 218 Nebraska Ave. SW, Huron, died Thursday, February 17, 2005, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 1:00 PM Monday, February 21st at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Channell officiating. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery, Iroquois, SD with Military Rites by the Bensley-Rounds American Legion Post #280. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday afternoon. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM Sunday evening at the funeral home. Maynard Muilenburg was born on February 11, 1919, to Hubert and Martha (Rundell) Muilenburg at Parker, SD. At an early age he moved with his family to a farm near Manchester, SD, then to a farm near Bancroft, SD where he attended and graduated from Bancroft High School. He worked with his dad on the farm until he enlisted in the United States Army on February 21, 1941, and served our country in the European Theater for the duration of World War II. He was honorably discharged on August 11, 1945. Maynard was united in marriage to Berneice Wells on October 8, 1949 in Bancroft. The couple began their life farming south of Bancroft. They moved to Iroquois in 1956 where they raised their family and were members of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Throughout his life, he was a semi truck driver, worked at Armours, and owned, managed and operated restaurants. They moved to Huron in 1974 where he resided until the time of his death. He enjoyed children and was the local bicycle repair man in Iroquois. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, coached American Legion Baseball, was an NRA Safety Course Instructor, and umpired and coached Womans Slow-pitch softball. He was a volunteer firefighter and an EMT for the Iroquois fire and ambulance service. He was an active member of the Bensley-Rounds American Legion Post #280 in Iroquois and served as Post Commander and County Commander. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards, horses and rodeo. He was an avid reader and well versed in many subjects. His literary interests included a broad spectrum. Grateful for having shared his life include his wife Berneice Muilenburg of Huron; his three sons, Macy (Sue) Muilenburg of Huron, Corrie (Julie) Muilenburg of Huron and Craig (Linda) Muilenburg of Whitlock Bay; three daughters, JanElla (Jene) Carroll of Huron, JoLynne (Kevin) Parmely of Huron, and JuliAnn (Joe) Wolf of Las Vegas, NV; two grandchildren, Justin Wolf of Las Vegas, NV and Bridget Muilenburg of Huron; three step grandchildren, Rusty Parmely of Mitchell, Billie Jo Parmely of Colorado and Dawnita Parmely of Minnesota and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Berne, his parents, two brothers, Leland and Albert, one sister, Ruth Perry and two nieces and one nephew.
