Maxine Ruth [Walters] Schroeder, 87, of 617 Pine Ave, Alpena died at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron on Thursday morning, October 4, 2007 after a short battle with cancer. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, October 8 at the United Parish Church in Alpena with Pastor Sarah Herman officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Huron. Public visitation will be 1:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday at Welter Funeral Home with a Public Prayer Service at 7:00 pm and family present from 6:30 to 8:00 pm and also closed casket visitation on Monday one prior to the service at the church. Maxine Ruth Walters was born on June 23, 1920 to Mark and Edna [Wright] Walters at Huron. She attended Meyers School where she obtained her elementary certificate and graduated from Huron High School in 1937. During her high school years, she especially enjoyed playing the violin in the orchestra and had fond memories of playing at Campbell Park. Throughout her lifetime, she continued to enjoy violin music. On June 23, 1939 she married William Bill Otto Schroeder at her parents farm southwest of Huron. They farmed in the Virgil and Huron area for many years with the exception of four years in Franklin where they were employed by the school district. In 1966 they moved to Belle Fourche where she resided for 41 years. She held various jobs in her beloved Black Hills area and retired from the South Dakota State Highway Patrol Port of Entry near Whitewood in 1987. Bill and Maxine enjoyed years of fishing and camping together in their retirement. Her yard and flowers were her pride and joy. She spent countless hours in her meticulous yard; her roses were some of her favorites. Maxine was a talented seamstress and loved reading and listening to country/western music. Bill died September 29, 1992. She was a member of the Belle Fourche United Methodist Church and was involved with Meals on Wheels. Fall brought the Concert Association musical entertainment which she so loved and looked forward to. Maxine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Ron and Shirley Schroeder of Alpena; two granddaughters and their husbands: Rochelle and Ron Agrigento of Homewood, IL and Wendy and Todd Chandler of Steger, IL: she will also be missed by her two great-granddaughters: Lauren and Alyssa Agrigento who called her Nana; three brothers and their wives: Bucky and Nancy Walters of Wessington Springs, Ted and Leona Walters of Silt, CO and Norm and Phyllis Walters of Rapid City; three sisters-in-law: Dora Walters of Pierre, Marilyn and Joe Bushong of Renton, WA and Marie Schortzmann of Merced, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive their Aunt Maxine. She was preceded in death by her husband: Bill; parents: Mark and Edna; brother: Bob and an infant brother along with many Schroeder family members.
