Maxine Paye, age 93, of Huron, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Avantara Nursing Home in Huron, South Dakota with her family by her side. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 20, 2022 at Welter Funeral Home with burial to follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation, with her family present, will be from 4-6 PM, Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service on Friday morning.

Maxine Ardis Burnett was born on July 15, 1928 in Valley Township, South Dakota to parents Roy and Alma (Katz) Burnett. Maxine was number 9 of 13 children born to Roy and Alma. She attended the Valley Township Country School for grades K-8. She graduated from Huron High School. After high school, Maxine started working at Newberry's and then JC Penney's.

She married Leonard Paye on February 19, 1949 in Huron. Leonard and Maxine lived on the family farm near Cavour where Maxine was a homemaker, lovingly caring for her children and the homestead. She loved to garden and sew. While raising her family, she also raised chickens, pigs and cows. Her husband Leonard was a World War II veteran and she and Leonard were very involved in the Huron VFW Post 1776. Maxine served as President of the VFW Auxiliary and treasurer for many years. She was also involved with Beadle County Extension and Degree of Honor Lodge. Maxine and Leonard also enjoyed going to the South Dakota State Fair where she worked the Women's Building for 25 years. Maxine was also a member of the Huron Area Antique Power Association. She looked forward every year to exhibiting the "biggest" tractor of the show, the Aultman Taylor and also visiting with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Jeff Paye of Huron, Thomas (Marlin) Paye of Huron, Debra Meyers of Cavour, Steven Paye of Cavour, and Todd (Connie) Paye of Cavour; 14 grandchildren; and many, many great and great-great grandchildren; her brother, Arlie (Shirley) Burnett of Huron, sisters, Jessie Root of Huron and Beverly Albee of Alpena; sister-in-law, Betty Patridge of La Mirada, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leonard on March 6, 2008; her son, Michael Paye, 2 grandsons, Gareld Paye and Dylan Paye; and nine siblings.

Memorials may be made to Huron VFW Post 1776 in Maxine's honor.
