Obituary

Mary Lou Wallenstein, 91, of Huron, passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023 at Avantara in Huron. Her Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, November 13, 2023 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Mary Lou was born on February 5, 1932 to parents Howard and Anna (Julius) Pahne in Sisseton, South Dakota. She attended Sisseton schools, graduating in 1951. She then attended teacher's college, earning a teaching degree. She taught for a short time and realized it wasn't for her. She then moved to Huron and worked at Ann's Café where she met her future husband, Richard Wallenstein. They were married in August of 1952.

Mary Lou worked at various places over the years, including Armours, Midcom, selling Avon and baking and decorating delicious cakes. She retired from Raven Industries after 28 years in 1998.

Mary enjoyed time with her many grandchildren. She also loved to embroidery, and she made beautiful, crocheted afghans, one for each of her children. Mary Lou loved spending winters at her home in Mesa, Arizona for 10 years. She always had a huge spread of food for the holidays, she could have fed all of Huron! Mary was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and a 60 year member of the TOPS club in Huron.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard in 1998, her son Richard (Dick), her parents, her brother Robert, a daughter Julie at birth, a great-grandson Sanden Voorhees, and a granddaughter Cally Anne Wallenstein, and aunts and uncles. She was also preceded by her daughters-in-law, Kelly, Sally and Nancy Wallenstein.

She is survived by her children, Leanne (Roger) Voorhees of Huron, Renee (Darrell) Pownell of Watertown, Ron (Nancy) Wallenstein of Huron, Rodney (Nikkie) Wallenstein of Wyoming, Michael Wallenstein of Huron, and David Wallenstein of Sisseton; sixteen grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.
