Obituary

Mary Maass, age 73, of Huron, and formerly of Cavour, died Monday, December 21, 2009, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.

Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 24, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mary Maass was born Mary Ann Baird, daughter of Clyde and Mary (Hartman) Baird, on March 9, 1936, in De Smet, SD. A short time later the family moved to Canova, SD; in 1938 to Iroquois, SD; and in 1943 to rural Iroquois. She graduated with honors from Iroquois High School in 1954.

In August 1954, Mary married George Ball, and from this union they had 3 daughters.

On September 2, 1962, Mary married Loren Bud Maass in Huron. Bud adopted the 3 girls and the family lived in the Huron/Cavour area.

Mary worked at Sears for 13 years in the catalogue department; Huron Grain & Feed for 9 years as a bookkeeper; and Pamida for 9 years as a sales clerk.

Mary was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the Joy Circle; and Royal Neighbors of America while living in Iroquois. Her family always came first, especially her grand- and great grandchildren. Her interests included reading, Bingo, word puzzles, cooking, and dancing.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Mary (Mike) Farrell of Cavour, Pat (Terry Lentz) Shoultz of Parkston, and Peggy (Doug) Eckmann of Cavour; 2 very special people in her life, Sally (Paul) Crowser of San Antonio, TX, and Nancy Buchanan of Artesia, NM; 5 grandchildren, Gayle (James) Stahl of Hitchcock, David (Rachel Clendenin) Farrell of Cavour, Joany (Randy) Nixon of Iroquois, Kristal (Nick) McKee of Akron, IA, and Brian (Jessica) Eckmann of Cavour; 6 great grandchildren, Sadie Stahl, Weston Stahl, Nathan Nixon, Alex Nixon, Emma Eckmann, and Drew Farrell; 1 brother, John Baird of Iroquois; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud on January 31, 2003; 1 brother and 3 sisters all in infancy; and 1 sister-in-law, Marlys Baird.
