Mary G. Decker, age 98, of Huron, died on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at the Sunquest Healthcare Center in Huron. A Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2008 at the Ideal Cemetery in Huron, SD. Mary Decker was born August 17, 1909 in Beadle County to Andrew G. and Susie (Wipf) Decker. She attended country grade school and graduated from Yale High School in 1928. Mary then went to Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and received a degree in 1963 from Huron College. Mary taught country schools in Beadle and Spink counties for 10 years. Mary then worked for the Department of Social Services Public Welfare office as a social worker for 34 years. During hard times on the farm, Mary helped her father with farming, operating horse drawn machinery, such as the plow, and disc cultivator. She also mowed and raked hay, and hauled grain. Mary sewed her own clothing. She enjoyed ceramics, and even won awards in a tri-state competition for some of her creations. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Ewald.
