Obituary

Mary E. Betty Patridge, age 84, formerly of Sun Quest Village, Huron, died Saturday, August 7, 2004, at her residence at 420 21st St. SW, Huron. There will be no services or visitation. Burial of her cremated remains will be held at a later date. (A joint memorial service was held for Claire and Mary at 1:30 PM, Sunday, June 26, 2005, at Rose Hill Church, rural Wessington, with Rev. Allen Sager officiating. Burial of their cremated remains will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.) Mary Patridge was born Mary Elizabeth Woodruff on July 22, 1920, the fourth child of Norman and Bertha (McFarling) Woodruff, in Bates Township, rural Wessington, SD. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Wessington High School in 1938. On May 27, 1938, Mary, known as Betty, married Arlo Fitch at Parker, SD. They were later divorced. On January 24, 1946, Betty married Claire Patridge at St. Lawrence, SD. They owned and operated the Standard Service Station and the Coffee Shop Caf in Wessington until 1953 when they moved to Winchester, ID, and later to San Mateo and Stockton, CA. They shared life there until Claires death in 1980. Betty moved to Huron in 1999. Her favorite hobbies were pinochle, needle crafts, and visiting with friends. She created innumerable afghans and quilts, primarily for the arrival of each new grand niece and nephew. She was never happier than when she was visiting with her family and telling stories about her untiring efforts to assist her mother in raising those pesky brothers and sisters. She is survived by 1 daughter, Patricia (Jack) Trentham of Sacramento, CA; 1 brother, Victor (Erma) Woodruff of Wolsey; 2 sisters-in-law, Ellen Woodruff of Lewiston, ID, and Lola Fitch of Ft. Pierre; 1 brother-in-law, Frank Smith of Tucson, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claire; 3 brothers, Joy, Eugene, and Norman, Jr.; 2 sisters, Gladys Bell and Arlene Smith; 2 sisters-in-law, Norma Woodruff, and Verbena Woodruff; and 1 brother-in-law, Joseph Bell.
